How the 90/180 rule works
Short-stay visitors can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area. For each day of your stay, look back over the previous 180 days: the days in that window must not add up to more than 90.
The window moves every day, so days from older trips drop out over time. The dates of entry and exit both count as days of stay, and all Schengen countries count together.
The area has 29 countries: 25 EU members plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Cyprus and Ireland are not part of it. Stays on a long-stay visa or an EU residence permit are not covered by this rule, so do not enter them.
FAQ
Do the entry and exit days count?
Yes. The day you enter and the day you leave both count as days of stay, even if you spent only a few hours there.
Does leaving the Schengen area reset the 90 days?
No. Leaving only stops new days from being added. Past days count until they are more than 180 days old.
Can I rely on this if my visa says fewer days?
No. If your visa sticker allows a different number of days or period, follow the visa. Do not use this calculator for it.
Does a stay in a non-Schengen country count?
No. Days in Cyprus, Ireland, the UK or Turkey do not count towards the 90 days.
